The way the Notes feature works on LJ, you see a note whenever you see the person's username.

Hmm, I just doublechecked, and the asterisk shows on instances of exampleusername, not the listing in someone else's profile. I think the "has a note indicator" should show up in third party profiles, so I'll go make a note to that effect on the discussion in here.
