Userpic Usage

Title:
Userpic Usage

Area:
Userpics

Summary:
be able to get stats on userpic usage

Description:
I have more than 100 userpics -- so I got the Big Account for 6 months to decide what I want to do.

Just had a wild thought. I know that I can look at all tags and/or see how many times each tag has been used. Is there a way to do that with icons? I'm fairly certain that I've got icons that have never been used -- but with 6 years of entries, I don't want to have to look at ever last one of them. Getting stats would really simplify that problem.

I love the idea, because it would really make userpic management easier for me. Even the 100+ I have uploaded right now is too overwhelming for me to contemplate, but use statistics would be wunderbar.

Two additional considerations:
- Could we have use-in-entry vs. use-in-comment stats as separate numbers?
- Currently, we have the ability to view userpics in "upload order" or "keyword order." I'd like another option: "use order," where it's sorted by most uses to fewest uses. If the entry vs. comment stats gets applied, then that'd be two more options: "use in entries order" and "use in comments order."

Not readily, actually: your entries are all on the same database server, but your comments are spread out everywhere, and I don't think it's actually possible to gather that data without killing the site dead.

Hmmm, isn't there the 'talkleft' table? Though I assume that that doesn't hold the userpic information.

Ahh, gotcha. Still, even "use in top-level entries" would be awesome.

This brings up another thought - icon use in personal journal entries vs. use in entries to communities. Would it be easy to differentiate that?

Not really, and comms would probably be another thing that couldn't easily be tracked/counted.

(Unless we added another db table to count the uses as the entry/comment were posted -- they'd only be accurate going forward, but still. Hrm.)

Ideally, stats would also distinguish between entries and comments.

I understand [staff profile] denise's caution on the first consideration, but I give a +1 to the second!

Ah, my 'with changes' was going to be "as long as it breaks up entry usage and comment usage", I use a different subset of my icons for each.

But if we can only have entry usage, that's good with me. It would be good to see which ones I do use most (and thus which ones will be kept if I revert down an account level?), as I really need to sort out my icons, most of them go back to 2004.

So if tracking comment/comm use isn't a possibility anyway, no changes needed.

My with changes: if the comment thing can be done (even just uses-going-forward) that would be great, if not, oh well.

Either way, the additional sort(s) on the userpic page would be nice.

to the extent that this would be feasible without putting a load on the site, I'm in favor. Once again, arguably this is a good paid feature.

Stats would be great but being able to sort by usage on Manage Userpics and User Icons would be enough for me.

Doesn't this stat kind of have to exist somewhere, because of the behavior when an account reverts from paid to free status? It's supposed to disable icons based on which are most/least frequently used in top-posts-in-own-journal, isn't it?

I have no clue what the best implementation of this would be, or what it'd look like without cluttering the interface, but something like this does sound like a natural outgrowth of the userpic feature.

This is also my "with changes", if possible to implement. :)
