Don't think learning HTML was a waste of time, you can't use CSS without knowing HTML. If CSS is used as a sheet seperately, then yes, it does load better. But more importantly, CSS renders better, and allows for more standardised stuff.
I haven't done my profile edit yet, but when I do I'll be putting everything into free floating boxes, so they'll wrap nicely.
It's a lot easier to learn, have a look at my most recent post, I've put some CSS tricks explanations in there, reading what the code is doing is fairly simple, all you need to do is figure out what CLASSes and IDs are and you're on your way: http://matgb.dreamwidth.org/361968.html
