I have to say I have the same problem with it myself to a certain extent, even though I actually made the suggestion. On the one hand, I wholeheartedly support ideas like Creative Commons licensing and the free-access culture. But on the other, I also recognise that I'm a creative person, and shouldn't I and other creative people be allowed to earn money out of what they create if they choose?

I certainly think it should be possible for people to opt any particular post or journal out of the system and make it free. Which I think a lot of the fanfic authors might choose to do, as [personal profile] zeborah points out above. Ultimately I think whether or not DW goes with this will be about the site's culture as a whole - whether DW people fall more on the "free to all" side or more on the "creating is work too" side.
