Summary:
Use the same mechanisms used for post-by-email to allow comment-by-email. That is, comments by email should only be allowed from your registered address(es), and you should have to enter a PIN.

Description:
Currently DW allows post-by-email (http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/emailpost) but doesn't allow you to reply to comments by email. This proposal adds commenting while avoiding some of the security problems that Livejournal (allegedly?) has with their reply-form-in-the-email solution.

Basically, we just add an option to the "mobile post settings" saying "Also allow comments by email". When commenting by email, you would have to put the PIN in the text of the comment. We could specify eg. that it should be the first line of the comment:

PIN: blahblah

A simple regexp should be able to strip PINs from comments and then check them against the user's actual PIN and make sure it's the right one.

The comment notification email should include a message to the effect of "Want to reply via email? Set it up here." (if you aren't registered for email replies) or, "To reply by email, simply reply to this message and include your PIN as described here" (with a link to the help or whatever).

### Icon selection when logging in via Comment reply

Icon selection when logging in via Comment reply

Area:
workflow: logging in, workflow: commenting, page: icons

Summary:
I've tried to reply to DW posts whilst I'm logged out, and had to log in via the Comment reply box. The login options work fine, but they don't allow me to pick a user icon.

Description:
When logging in via a comment, there's no way to access your userpics to pick an icon to go with your comment.

I'd like it if logging in via leaving a comment automatically refreshed the page or updated it somehow so that your userpic list became available to you before the comment was posted.

I imagine some people might object to this because it would slightly slow down the log-in process, but I think userpics have become such an important part of the communication process on DW that most people would be happy to have this option.

I have no idea how difficult this would be, but I'm hoping it wouldn't be too hard, since we already have a login option that returns you to your previous page that you were looking at, so I know this sort of thing can be done in principle. I'm just hoping the coders can make something like that work with the comment box.

Summary:
When a user receives an email notifying them of a comment, I suggest that it could be possible to reply to the comment by replying to the email.

Description:
At present, a notification email for a comment includes a box in which one can type a reply, if the email client supports this. A step further would be to allow one to respond by simply replying to the email.
The major advantage to this approach is that it would become possible to compose replies while using an email client offline.

I can see a couple of ways of doing it, and I'm sure others can suggest better:
1. Notification emails have a reply-to: which is set to a unique address for each notification. Facebook does this, using a ~50-character string. I have no idea whether this would be practicable for DW and/or DW-based sites, since it may involve changes in the mail system.
2. Put a token in the body email that is sent out, with a "DO NOT DELETE THIS BLOCK" warning. This is less robust, but doesn't "pervert" the email headers.

Either way one has to make assumptions on how the reply will be done - probably assuming that the user will top-post. Instructions for this could be included in the notification email.

I imagine that this is probably a non-trivial thing to implement, so I'm posting it as a "nice-to-have" :-)

### Shorter references to the original entry in e-mail comment notifications

Shorter references to the original entry in e-mail comment notifications

Area:

Summary:
Put only the subject and the x first characters of the entry instead of the whole text of the entry in the e-mail notification.

Description:
Right now, when someone comment on an entry (or a comment, but it's less of a problem) you wrote and you get the notification by e-mail, you see the whole text of your entry. If you had a big entry (fanfiction, pic!spam...) scrolling past it can get annoying fast.

Quoting only the subject and the 42 first characters (or another number) before quoting the comment would allow the original poster to identify their entry and get to the important information right away.

The text of the notification would go something like that :
User replied to your Dreamwidth entry titled [Title] which started with [the first 42 characters or whatever number]. Their reply was ...

### Replying from email while logged out

Summary:
Make it possible to reply to comments from the form in the notification email while logged out.

Description:
Currently you can't reply to comments from the reply form included in email notifications unless you're logged in. I want to suggest that functionality is restored.

Advantages: You don't have to log in on someone else's computer (or at work) just to fire off a quick reply to a comment. And if you have more than one account, you can reply to comments on both equally easily.

Problems: I've been told there are security issues? (I haven't heard of it causing any problems on LJ, though.)
