Filter management page: save button instead of autosave

Title:
Filter management page: save button instead of autosave

Area:
reading page filter management

Summary:
I would prefer having a basic "save" button on the reading-page filter management menu, instead of an autosave function.

Description:
Okay, so here's where this started. I'm currently having a problem on IE in which, when I try to select tags to include/exclude on my reading page filters, the "autosave" won't work. I submitted a support request; they confirmed this is a bug, and are looking into it. (For now I have to use a different browser to set filters, which is very annoying.)

The point is: in my support request, I mentioned that what I'd really prefer is just a plain old "save" button at the bottom of the filter-management page, instead of the autosave. Clicking a button to save changes seems much more reliable to me, and gives me more certainty that the change has actually gone through.

(In fact, coupled with the bug making it not work, I didn't even know there *was* an autosave actively trying to function on the page for a while. The little alert line that says "saving in X seconds" shows up near the top of the page--but I'm scrolled down to where I won't see it when I'm selecting tags to be filtered.)

Anyway, the person who answered my support ticket said my comment about wishing for a save button should be brought up here instead. So I figured it couldn't hurt to do so.

Bottom line, I just feel a lot more comfortable when pages have clear commands like a "save" button, instead of fancier and more bug-prone features like this autosave that's not even working for me.

I really like not having to click to save but I got used to it from using other sites/programs. However what's really disconcerting is 1) placement 2) no 'your changes have been saved' message. So I think there's room for improvement.

+1 on room for improvement

We all know that this page needs TLC, and that might mean a save button (especially if autosave is flaky), and definitely should mean a status update for when auto saving happens.

I like the autosave, but I would appreciate a save button in addition to the autosave, not instead.

*nods* I think Google Docs used to have both and it worked quite well.

I would love a save button. I don't want to lose autosave; it's been useful many times when my browser crashed unexpectedly. Which is... not uncommon. Apparently, WinXP machines aren't always happy with 20+ tabs in Firefox and half a dozen other programs open at once, and Win7 with MacAfee--the work setup--occasionally decides that it is offended at green pixels or something like that and needs a reboot without warning.

I am entirely aware that I'm pushing the XP machine outside of its comfort zone. The Win7 machine is owned by my job, and I don't have admin access; I can't even figure out what causes problems with it. (Insert irrelevant but sour comments about how I can work with 20gb of customer "HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL ATTORNEYS EYES ONLY" data, but am not trusted to change the wallpaper on my monitor.)

Point is: I get a lot of mileage out of autosave. I'd be happy to have a "save" button because then I'd know it worked, but I definitely don't want autosave removed or replaced.

I personally would prefer a replacement rather than both, but I guess I'm okay with both. Often the adjustment I am making to my filters is small enough that I get done well before the autosave is first invoked, and I have to sit there and wait for it to happen. Having a force-save button would be favorite.

I vote have both - I like the autosave.

I vote to have both. This is my Yes with changes.
